Cwm Soden and Castell Bach, near Cwmtydu

Leader: Howard Williams

Starting point: In the car park which is some 200metres short of St Tysilio Church (SN 363 572 Cod post: SA44 6LH).

From the A487 between Plwmp and Synod Inn, turn for Caerwedros, go through the village and straight on, across the road between Llwyndafydd and Nanternis, towards Cwmtydu; after about a mile, turn to the right towards the church. There isn’t room for more than about 15 cars on the designated parking land but we can also park carefully on the grass along the roads either side of the junction. However, it would be a good idea to bring as few cars as possible, for example by meeting other drivers in Cwmtydu and sharing cars from there. Please come in good time to start on the walk as usual at 10.30.

Map: http://tinyurl.com/tysilio  Click on + or – to change the scale of the map.

The Walk: A two hour circular walk of about 2 miles on good paths; over fields to the promontory to the north of Cwmtydu, on the coast path down to Cwm Soden beach (steep in places) and then up the valley and its southerly slope to the Church. Ascent: 350 feet mainly on climbing the steep path with many steps at the end tor reach the church.

Points of interest:  Great views of the coast, flowers at their best, Castell Bach, a clear Iron Age fort, a pretty valley, unexpected waterfalls, a church in a lovely spot.

Afterwards: There’ll be an opportunity to have refreshments in the Crown in Llwyndafydd or in the Café in Cwmtydu.

There’ll be a warm welcome to all. Welsh will be the language of the walk, so if you are beginning to learn you may not be able to follow much of what is said but it is an ideal opportunity to use all the Welsh you have learned and you can ask others to give you the gist – but please try to avoid using ‘English-only’ in any conversation.
